Technical Demonstrator - Creative Arts

About the Role

The Visual Arts Department at Leeds City College is recruiting a Visual Arts Technician Demonstrator to join its team. We are looking for someone to provide technical support for our delivery of BTEC courses in Art & Design and Fashion & Textiles.

We are leading the way across the West Yorkshire region by offering a wide provision of industry-led courses, including BTEC and Access to HE, which specifically prepare the next generation of creatives for University and/or working in the industry. We are a team of both industry and specialist academic teachers with first-class pastoral support staff who ensure that each of our students is provided with an exceptional experience with outcomes that match.

What You Will Do

  • Support learners to produce work.
  • Demonstrate technical techniques, technology and equipment to students as required by teaching staff to support study programmes.
  • Prepare and maintain the facilities and equipment to a high standard and ensure that the area and learners are compliant with all relevant Health and Safety Legislation including COSHH regulations.
  • Maintain and organise teaching spaces in relation to curriculum need.
  • Introduce new techniques and technologies relevant to subject area, and facilitate small groups of students in technical workshops and support independent learning sessions.
  • Oversee the technical aspects of students’ work and use of specialist resources and equipment across the curriculum.
  • Keep abreast of new technologies, and demonstrate new equipment to students.

About You

  • Proficient with sewing machines, garment construction and pattern cutting.

  • Experience and understanding of creative processes in Art & Design, including printmaking.

  • Ideally have experience working with students both independently and as a group, but we equally value a willingness to learn.

  • Good organisational skills including implementation of systems to ensure the smooth running of a busy Art and Textiles dispensary and store room.

  • Have the ability to troubleshoot technical or material related issues creatively.
